Bargaining with the city continued on June 2.

Mandatory standby for public works employees has emerged as a sticking point with management demanding significant changes to the current practice. We have met with public works employees twice on this issue and ran a survey, the overwhelming majority do not support these changes.

Bargaining was scheduled for June 5 but was canceled. The next scheduled sessions are June 8 and June 15.

I attended the 2023 Oregon AFSCME Convention in Salem on April 29 and 30 as 2975’s delegate.  Here are a few of the highlights.

We voted to collect one dollar per member per year for a disaster relief fund, beginning this July.  This fund, not to exceed $100,000, is intended for Oregon AFSCME members and may include disasters not declared so by the Governor.

We bargained on Tuesday the 23rd of May (we had originally had bargaining scheduled for May 19, but that day was canceled). It was a day that started at 8 and ended around 6. While we seem to be getting closer to an agreement, there are, as always, a couple major issues that separate us from reaching a complete 3-year agreement.  The Team has recommended that we put out the City’s and Union’s last proposals at our May 23rd session.

PORTLAND, OR - After a strong majority of the over 240 postdoctoral research staff at Oregon Health and Sciences University submitted union authorization cards, the Oregon Employment Relations Board certified their union with Oregon AFSCME.

Now that the Postdocs have their union, they are looking towards bargaining their first contract.

Your bargaining team exchanged proposals with the city today.

All of our proposals were package proposals and we believe we’re getting to a better framework. We had conversations about wages, insurance, boot reimbursement, standby and the CDL program.

Today was the last day for any new proposals and your union proposed language for paid leave Oregon and how it will be implemented.

Our next bargaining session will be May 19, if you’re interested in being an observer on your own time, let us know so that we can make arrangements.

PORTLAND, OR, April 20, 2023—After negotiating a three-year collective bargaining agreement, Central City Concern (CCC) and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) have signed a Neutrality Agreement declaring non-represented employees have the freedom of choice on the question of whether or not to be represented by Oregon AFSCME. Over 300 of the 1,100 CCC employees are currently represented by AFSCME.

Oregon AFSCME mourns the senseless murder of former Correctional Officer, Joseph Johnson who was serving as a reservist with the City of Nyssa Police Department when he was killed this past weekend. Johnson is survived by his wife and two children, ages 12 and 14.

Johnson’s commitment to his community was unshakable.
